“Life is the period between one breath and another. Life is also a series of moment to moment decisions & actions which continuously shape up our behaviour, competencies, beliefs & identity in our personal life or professional life”
Our corporate success is measured annually through our performance appraisal system which has clearly defined key result areas & key performance indicators. All of us are familiar with KPI’s, but we do not know that our BPI determines and influences the KPI’s in life.
Let’s explore this point further.
Key Performance Indicators are specific metrics to measure your key result areas and how you are performing at your assigned job functionalities.
The key traits & competencies that influences your KPI & hence your key results areas are :
Breath Performance Indicators are,
- The number of breaths per minute
- The depth of each breath(Heart Rate Variability)
- Heart rate per minute
- Brain Coherence Score
- Stress levels
To understand the link between the BPI & KPI, we need to know a little about our own physiology.
Majority of the functions that demonstrate those traits and competencies are performed by the frontal lobes & pre-frontal cortex of the brain which is also called the executive centre of the brain.
There are two ways to activate these brain centres:
Long Way) A self-assessment on all these parameters helps us to know where you are right now. Then understand every competency, gather more intellectual knowledge and act on a few learning’s. Though this step is very much essential for basic understanding, people generally don’t convert this knowledge into action, behaviour, habit and permanent change. This is a lengthy and ineffective process.
Short way) Supply lots of oxygen to these parts of the brain governing these function facilitating faster activation of these areas and hence habit & behaviour formation. This is a fast and powerful method process.
Heart plays a crucial role in supplying oxygen to these parts of the brain which are highly responsible for corporate success. Physiologically your heart has to beat slowly and steadily to push the blood flow to these parts of the brain. The most important point to note is, when we inhale, our heart beat increases and when we exhale, our heat beat decreases. This difference between the upper heart beat and lower heart beat (the upper peak & lower peak) is called Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Higher the variability better is the supply of oxygen to the brain.
But we do not have any direct awareness or control over the heart & its function. The heart is also the switch board of the mind. Faster the heart beat, the lesser the ability to stay focused and think clearly.
Average corporate citizen breathes 14-20 times per minute. Under moderate or high stress, the number of breaths increases even upto 30-40 breaths per minute. The below graph is an Operations Head of a large MNC
When the breath count increases, the heart’s capability to push oxygen to the brain against gravity decreases. So the intricate executive centre of the brain is under nourished leading to impaired performance in these areas.
To make long lasting changes at the neuronal levels of the brain, requires abundant oxygen supply. Higher HRV is an indicator of large supply of oxygen to the brain and can be achieved by slow & deep breathing.
Ancient Indian wisdom states that slower and deeper the breath, the better is the performance of the brain. Neuroscience has also today proven the same point, that for autonomic balance of the nervous system and peak performance & well-being, we need to breath slowly & deeply.
